I have broadband. Now what?!

Hmm. After exactly a year without broadband I have got myself reconnected.

Unfortunately I don’t know what to do with it now! I’ve spend a year connecting via my mobile in a 2G area: Think 56 Kbps modem, occasionally peaking at 5.9 KB / second, though most of the time getting less than 1. I get better connectivity on the (above ground part of the) underground and on the M6.

So now everything I’ve got used to doing at home can be done in ten minutes rather than more than an hour, I found myself just sitting there last night thinking, “what did I actually used to do on the internet?”. I checked out youtube: how do people spend so much time there?  I headed over to facebook to see what’s changed: I remembered the original reason I never really used it. I flicked up Front Row and started watching film trailers: That’s actually quite entertaining. However, there must be more!

Is instant messaging still used? I prefer the phone!

Are there any decent (legal) music and film download sites yet?

What do you do on your broadband?!

Answers on a postcard or in the comments!

Olympic medal table

Although not very interested in the day to day activities over in Beijing I am interested by the medal table. After seeing us (Great Britain) at around position 7 earier in the week I checked again earlier today. We are currently in 3rd Place.

Gold Silver Bronze Total
China 37 14 14 65
United States 19 22 25 66
Great Britain 12 7 8 27

I wondered if I could skew this by playing with statistics. I figured our population may be a strength, so I went for Medals per Capita.
The good news is that we beat USA and China. Unfortunately we’re now beaten by Jamaica among others.

Position Country Population per Gold
1 Jamaica 1,402,166
2 Slovakia 1,818,469
3 Australia 1,872,805
4 Slovenia 2,007,711
5 New Zealand 2,086,730
6 Georgia 2,315,421
7 Denmark 2,742,362
8 Mongolia 2,996,081
9 Switzerland 3,790,760
10 Norway 4,644,457
11 Czech Republic 5,110,456
12 Finland 5,244,749
13 Great Britain 5,540,356
27 USA 15,990,771
33 China 38,001,274

If anyone has any other ideas that put us near the top of the table, let me know!

I’ve already tried useing GDP per Capita though that swings it back the other way..

I left my Deathstar in San Fran

Excellent home made vieo and there are a couple of real laugh out loud moments. I love the way that everyone treats it as though they’re everyday occurances and its not unusual to have Tie fighters screaming across the bay let alone star destroyers hovering just above the Golden Gate Bridge…

Call for computer parts

A few months ago I built a nice machine and gave it to a mate thinking that would help me run down all my boxes. Well now I’m setting up an office in my spare room so I dug it all out again. It turns out there’s almost nothing worth having left :(.

I currenly have a 1333 MHz Athlon, a motherboard to match with 256MB of RAM (2*64 + 1*128). If anyone has anything spare that can bring me into the 21st century that would be great! I’m looking for a Motherboard, CPU, RAM and sound and graphics cards. I’ve got everything else. Let me know in the comments or email!

Happy friday!

Save Bletchley Park!

From El Reg; this is a worthwhile cause!

As has been reported elsewhere, Bletchley Park “have two to three more years of survival”.

The Bletchley Park Trust receives no external funding. It has been deemed ineligible for funding by the National Lottery, and turned down by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Please do not allow this crucial piece of both British and World culture to disappear. If ever an example were needed of Britain leading the world, this surely would be it. To allow it to fall into the hands of developers would be simply unconscionable.

The e-petition is here. I don’t think I need to say anything else other than this is the first e-petition I’ve signed!
